It Started with a Door Slam

I was nineteen years old, standing on a stranger's doorstep in suburban Australia, trying to sell books. I was terrible at it. Not "room for improvement" terrible. I mean spectacularly bad. The kind of bad where people closed the door before I finished my opening sentence.

My sales manager was a bloke called Stan Rex. Stan happened to be the number one salesman in the entire organisation. Worldwide. And Stan didn't pitch. He told stories. Customer stories. He'd stand on that same doorstep and say, "Let me tell you about a family down the road..." and within three minutes, people were inviting him inside.

That was the moment everything changed for me. Not a course. Not a framework. A bloke on a doorstep, showing me that the fastest way to earn trust is to let your customers do the talking.

I've been telling customer stories ever since. That single skill has driven tens of millions of dollars in revenue across my career.

The Referral Thing

By twenty, I'd stumbled onto something else that most people still haven't figured out: referral-based marketing. Not "ask your clients for referrals" referral marketing. Systematic, structured partnerships that generate warm introductions on repeat.

I learned it young. I still use the same core methodology today. The tactics evolve, the platforms change, but the principle is identical: make it easy for people who trust you to introduce you to people who need you.

Thirty Years of Doing the Work

In the 1990s, I wrote a 400-page marketing manual called "Grow Your Business." Four hundred pages. By hand, essentially. No AI, no templates, no ghostwriter. Just a bloke who couldn't stop thinking about how to help businesses find customers.

Around the same time, I wrote a direct mail campaign for an industry association. Their existing campaign was converting at less than one percent. Mine converted at ten percent. A tenfold improvement. That wasn't magic. It was storytelling applied to paper.

In 2006, I became a brand-new affiliate marketer and built a full-time income within one month. From zero. I mention this not to brag, but because it taught me something critical: when you understand how trust and persuasion work, the medium almost doesn't matter. Doorsteps, direct mail, digital - the principles are the same.

The Screen Became My Office

Here's a fact that surprises people: every single client conversation I've had since 2010 has been virtual. Every one. Over 10,000 sales conversations through a screen. Millions of dollars in personal sales. All without ever sitting across a table from someone.

I moved to Asia in 2013 and haven't looked back. Currently based in Vietnam, business incorporated in Singapore. I work with B2B service providers all over the world, and the distance has never once been a problem. Turns out, when you're good at building trust through conversation, the postcode is irrelevant.

Why I Built The Trust Builder Method

Here's what I know after thirty-plus years: expertise alone doesn't cut it anymore. It used to. Ten years ago, if you were genuinely good at what you did, that was enough to attract clients. But then everyone became an "expert." Social media made it easy to look credible. AI made it even easier. Now basic expertise is table stakes.
